Spanish Shirt

You know how certain scents or fragrances remind you of something or someone? Well, I have a shirt that reminds me of Spain. Actually I have two shirts and a pair of shoes that reminds me of Spain. However today, I'm just wearing the one shirt. This one simple white shirt, long sleeve with a boat neck. Thick, so it almost feels like a sweater...ah memories.

When I was in college there was one thing I wanted more than to graduate, and to learn how to write grammatically correct sentences. I wanted to do a study abroad program. Even though I had always wanted to go I waited until that last minute where I had to send the full payment for the trip to be included. So I ended up in Madrid, Spain all June 2007. Best last minute decision ever!

One day during this trip my roommate and I went shopping. I bought this white shirt and she bought a pink one. Needless to say, this shirt will for ever remind me of that trip...and maybe now of the fact that I never did quite learn how to get over my run-on sentence issue.

Also, I think I'm finally going to start blogging again. I took the Spring "off" and seeing as how yesterday was the first day of summer...I don't have an excuse anymore.

Blog Spring Break?

{best cupcakes sold at the best winery i've ever been to...and I've only been to 4 so that's saying a lot...sort of.}

I'm taking a little break from blogging. Technically I've been on this break since my last post but decided to actually make this a notice to my 9.5 readers and for myself so I can relax. I've been a busy girl and will continue to be for the next week or so. Plus I'm off to China next week and I still don't know what to pack?

But before I'm off to the far east I'm off to dream about these cupcakes and I'll be back soon. Hopefully with more energy and better pictures and a more defined grip on grammar and little wittier! Well...definitely with more energy.

I'm not even over the fact that 2011 is gone, now I have to accept that January 2012 is almost over? What gives father time? All this prompted me to take a look back at 2011, on the blog at least. These were my favorite posts by month:

February: Dress Remix
March: Witnessing a Live Birth
April: Are you there God? It's Me, Unemployed

 June: Happy Father's Day
July: Book or Movie?
August: Visiting Tim Burton
September: Visiting the Getty
October: Thankful Print
November: I'm Thirty
December: If You Like Green PiƱa Colada...Tea

Also, 2011 was the year I became addicted to gel nail polish, Pinterest, and coconut water. There you have it folks...one whole year. Ready for this next one? Because I'm not.

Scarf Swap

A few weeks ago while perusing through some blogs I came upon a Scarf Swap Invitation. Being that I am one that never turns down a scarf swapping invitation I signed up. So how does a scarf swap work? I will send a complete stranger a scarf and she will send me one. We are then supposed to blog about it. Soooo here we go!

I was paired up with Miss Jessica from Toujours C'est La Vie, lovely gal over in Arizona. She sent me a very pretty brown and orange pattern scarf to play with. It was a little too short to really wear like a scarf around my neck but that's a good thing because it's way too hot to have something around my neck right now. My first thought then was to put it in my hair. However, there is a reason I don't wear scarfs in my hair. They always fall off. Every time! Even if I try to pin it. It manages to finds a way down. The only time they do stay on is when I tie them at the top.

But then I just end up looking like Aunt Jemima...err Tupac. Tupac is cooler right?

I wasn't sure how Tupac looked in this photo so I posed with my best "I'm a bad a$$ gangsta" look. Yes, I'm aware it's a pretty pathetic attempt.

But maybe this little guy would stay so I tried this headband look...

but a few hours later it fell and I was wearing it like a necklace.
Taking a self-portrait with an iPhone while sitting at your desk and while trying to not get caught by coworkers takes more work than you think! I then decided I didn't want to deal with it all day so I tuned it into a cuff and wore it like so the rest of the day...

I went to lunch with the BFFs and had them take the following fashionable outfit photos...

However the only ones I liked were the ones where I look really awkward. ...

Not sure what was going on here, but doesn't This Olive Garden have a pretty little setting with the waterfall and all...

The wind was not helping either... I didn't flash anyone but I think Claudia did.

Finally I just gave up and requested my camera back.

So there you have it folks... a good ol' scarf swap. I also noticed a correlation with my hair and the scarf. Every time I changed the scarf, I changed my hair style... bet ya didn't know how creative I could get with my hair AND a scarf... I wore em 4 ways in one day :) Those are skills one is born with I suppose.

Writing My Blog

This post should really be called "Writing my blog...Procrastination!" For example, I should really be writing an actual post that is waiting to be edited or working on the photos... but instead I'm here writing about writing this blog.

So how does this little piece of genius literature come to be? Well, first of all, the genius part might just be in my head, second I swear I do actually have a real process...most of the time. OK, seriously here is how the magic happens:

My post fall into 4 types:
1. Impulsive posts, these get created on the spot, or because of something that happened to me recently. Sometimes there are no photos and it's just me writing away. For those post I usually use "Googled" photography to help enhance an other wise boring page. This current post for example falls under that category. So would these ones: New Year in Minnesota Don't Cha Know, Physically fit! Physically fit! You get the point. These are easy because, they just flow and I'm usually done in anywhere from 30 minutes (only happened once) to like 2 or 3 hours (most of the time).

2.Guest post, these appear once a month and are always different. Always. It's a serious mystery to me what will be handed in. My deadline is the month they are assigned to so the post can be published anytime within the 30/31 day period. Best part, all I do is edit for like 10 minutes and put it all together and done!

3. Planned post, these post have the most detail and take the most time. I have a list of post that I want/need to do. Sometimes they are a string of post like the never ending "Tiny Room Makeover:..." posts, or the last one I wrote Witnessing a Live Birth, that one was one I even said in a previous post that I would write about. I do that sometimes and therefore the list of "planned" posts keeps growing. I currently have 6 posts in this list. These can take a few hours a day over a few days or like 6 to 8 hours total, this includes photo editing.

4. Category post, these are are ones I always feature like "Over the weekend..." which are long and encompass my weekend activities, or "Family recipe:..." or even things like writing about a movie, or restaurant, these would be my "experience" posts. I like calling them experiences over reviews because, seriously, I'm not an expert so what I'm sharing is my experience. Here are some examples: I was ShoeDazzled!, The Town. In essence they are basically planned but easier to write because I already have a format of sorts.

So, that's the easy part. Once an idea comes to my head I know immediately which category of post it will fall in. But I actually do care how I sound and how I write so here are my 4 phases, i currently have posts in every single phase...
  1. Idea! This stage is like when you have an assignment to do or a report to hand in. I keep an actual real paper journal of "ideas". It's like an initial outline of what a post will have. This pretty much only applies to Planned and Category posts. I'm one of those geeks that enjoyed making outlines in school.
  2. Start! This phase is where I actually sit down on a computer and create a new post in blogger and start typing. Like just seriously just start typing. no pictures, no links, just words. Plus a working tittle and maybe some (notes) to myself that never get published cause that would be embarrassing.
  3. Fill! This stage is where I decided what photos I will use, how to edit them, where to put them. Plus activate all links, remove (notes), preview layout. Add more or remove actual written content. Use a video, take more photos, or even scrap the entire post...It hurts when I have to do that...
  4. Edit! This is a constant back and forth. And still I never, ever catch everything. I have yet to write a post where I don't go back after it has been published and smack my forehead at a very obvious typo or error in my grammar. Spelling is the funniest, you should see my creative spelling abilities...
So there you go...that's my process. It's a lot of work. Amazingly the writing is the easiest part. Specially since I like doing it. Writing a post is a piece of cake. Filling it in with stuff and editing...that takes time and patience and time and patience and time, and more time.

I enjoy doing this. It's a way for me to release some stress, even if I get new stress about not writing...sounds counter productive but I promise it's not. The "stress" I feel is more like a need to write because I feel happy once I do. It makes me smile when I finally hit publish for the and am satisfied with a post. I don't do this to get paid, to get famous or for attention so even though I feel bad I haven't written anything in about 3 weeks now, it doesn't really affect me in any way.

I don't considered myself a writer, and I never will. Ironically, it's what I get complimented on the most. The way I write, not what I did, say, wear, photograph, etc... just the way I write. So thank you. It means a lot to me. I'm of to prepare for my Pulitzer prize...bahahah

On Hiatus For Thanskgiving

So... I've been MIA on here since my last guest blogger post. Life gets hectic sometimes and for a few days I forget I have this blog. Not like in an abandoned child, bad Mother way but more of a let's just procrastinate a little because I don't have time right now, hey that's what I did with all my college papers and I managed to pass so it's gotta work here too! A lot goes into writing post sometimes. Maybe I should do a post on how I create my post? Hmm...

I will be back on track after the this weekend. I need to recover from the eating and the shopping I intend to do. Have a Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!!

I'm Going Going Back Back to Blogging Blogging...

I've been MIA for some time now for a few reasons. First, I actually needed to take a breather from the writing because I was starting to feel dry. Like I was writing to just write and not because I really wanted to express or share. After the "3 week experiment" it just seemed like the blog was lost . No focus or direction. What was the point? Also, there were some major changes in the Marisol Universe...Marisol World...Mari's World. Note to self: Come up with better saying.

One major change was...drum roll please...I got a new job! More about that in a complete post. So that means I was in some major transitions. I figured this would be a good time to break and then re-assess once I felt settled. I spent some time really trying to see if I wanted to do this. What would I write? Who would I share it with? So on. While those questions swirled la cabesa, I decided to spruce it up a bit here on Life As I (You)...Oh wait!! Yeah that's right I changed the name. The Sea & Sol is the new name.

Life As I (you) Know It! seemed too impersonal to me. So I did a little play on my name. If ya don't speak Spanish let me explain. My name is MARISOL...brake that up and you get MAR I SOL... Mar=Sea and Sol = Sun. So I kept the Sol and changed the Sea. Why? because through this blog you will Sea right to my Sol. (See right through my soul...for those scratching your heads and giving me the "you are crazy" look). I also changed from WordPress to Blogger as the host. Easier for me to manipulate.

While giving the blog a makeover I also looked for inspiration from blogs that I enjoy reading. There are a few that I look at. I guess what I love most about those blogs is they all share about their life while sharing what they know. All I know is my life and what I try to do! So that is what I will write about. With a sprinkle of inspiration from others and of course my friends.  Being the nerd that I am sometimes, I sat down and wrote an outline of the blog. No, seriously like the kind teachers made you do when you had to write a paper. I loved making those! I copied it down below so you can marvel at my genius...or laugh, whateves!
  1. Over the Weekend
    1. Monday or Tuesday
    2. Events, Parties, Trips, Holidays, or anything relevant to this category.
  2. Guest Post
    1. Once a month – Wednesdays?
    2.  A friend/family member, no specific topic but keep it with the tone of my blog
  3. Project
    1. As they happen
    2. DIY, Renovations, How To’s, Research an anything fitting the category.
  4. Life
    1. As it happens 1 or 2 times a week.
    2.  Personal stories, family stories
    3.  Style files, movie reviews, show recaps etc.
So that is what the blog will consist of and how often I hope to do so. The blog will probably change with time and some of the above will and will not work.  I also hope to hear from you my friends and family. After all, I do this for me as a creative outlet but what's the point if you don't have an audience to encourage you? I expect my readership to remain small and limited to friends and fam, this blog is dedicated to you. But feel free to share this blog if you want to.

Love ALWAYS,

Marisol
