Valentine's Day Freebies

Last year's V-Day post I shared my view on the day and some retro cards. This year it's all about free stuff. Let's say you are 13 and can't afford a legit Valentine's day for that special someone, have I got a date for you! Or even if you are single I say go for it, it's totally doable with a friend...or stranger.

You need to start with dinner. Now here is a win win situation. Head to your local Qdoba. The deal is you kiss your valentine (or in their words "an understanding stranger" so even if single ...win win my freinds) and you get a free entree with the purchase of one.

After Dinner you need some dessert. What better dessert than a cookie? I don't know how good their cookies are but for free I'm willing to give them a review.

You may also want to have a warm drink, it's pretty chilly out. So head on over to Coffee Bean. If I can get two Chai Latte's I'm all in. You already know I love me some CB!

Finish of the night with a romantic movie in. Or a blooody action packed adventure, what ever floats your boat! You may want to reserve your movie though, Redbox's get empty quickly!

You need a gift right? Well Bath & Body Works has got you covered! Cherry Blossom is pretty awesome. They also have a Facebook freebie.

So there you have it! There are more freebies out there for today so enjoy! Just Google them. I'm liking the Krispy Kreme one too! Speaking of Goggling stuff, how completely, awesome-ly cute is Google's Doodle for today? Pretty darn-tootin awesome! It reminded me of me an The Boyfriend. I may or may not have shed a tear.

Happy Valentine's Day Everyone!

Valentine's Day Stuff

Single or not it's valentines day tomorrow. Now, most couples will do something or another tomorrow but recently I've been hearing most are doing something around the date instead. Good for you, people. The Boyfriend and I have been doing that for years.

This year we spent all day Saturday together doing all kinds of different stuff: We went hiking in the morning (I dressed in one too many layers, lesson learned!), ate lunch at one of our favorite places,  took a nap (20 minutes goes a long way), played with his nephew, got into a fight, made up, went to go see The Artist where we sneaked in dinner...in my purse.

only shot of the whole day...
But come tomorrow we will probably just hang out together and exchange a gift. Which leads to the gift guide I handed to The Boyfriend.
  • A loose leaf tea infuser...
{found here}
  •  An electric kettle (wich was on the x-mas list but did not make it under the tree and for some reason I have yet to purchase it myself)
{found here}
  • Or any of the following 3 fragrances...
(D&G 3 L'Imperatrice // Marc Jacobs Daisy Eau So Fresh // Clean}

Let's see what surprise awaits me tomorrow. Are you Valentine-ing on a non 14th day? If not tomorrow i got ya covered on a budget, last minute type of date or an easy way to score some free stuff courtesy of St. V.

Happy Belated New Year!

5 days in already? I think it's still OK to say Happy New Year! Y'all know I'm not a stickler for grammar on the blog, also this is the only place I say Y'all, but there is something that really grinds my gears! It's when people say "Happy New Years!" Years? How many years are we celebrating, I thought it was just the one new one? My bad.

So, nothing to report about this new year celebration (or years for those of you that do the multiple celebration thing) I spent it at home drinking hot chocolate and wondering why no one told Dick Clark his tan was reaching umpa loompa status. Still an improvement from last year where I had to travel...to Minnesota.

I'm also not making any resolutions. I never do. I used to but I never keep them so it's better this way. But I do have a feeling of wanting to accomplish something this year and putting out in writing...will work on a plan...

Birthday Challenge

Today is not my birthday. Nope, my birthday is 15 days from today. I've always taken my b-day as a personal holiday. I usually try to plan something to celebrate, but this year I really lacked the motivation to plan something.

{source}

It's not a regular ol' birthday, it's my 30th so I felt like I had to do something spectacular! But spectacular never came to mind. Now to some this means nothing, it's just another day, right? Being one to ALWAYS make a big deal of her birthday, I do not fall anywhere near that category of thinking so I couldn't figure out why I wasn't excited? It's definitely not from some stigma of turning thirty I hope, it is a big deal to me but not in a bad way. I welcome the age, I'm the happiest and most confident I have ever been in my life....so what is it? Not sure if I'll completely figure out what happened but the birthday plans are moving and in the works so I'm starting to feel better. As far as the blog is concerned, I'm celebrating all month. That should get me in my birthday mood right? I will be very selfish this month, making it all about me. Behold, my 30 themed blogging challenge ideas:

Challenge 1. Find a photo of myself at every birthday/age.
Difficulty Level : HIGH. For the first years or so there are hardly any photos of me in existence. Not sure what happened to them but I know I might fail for some years. Plus for some reason i was not a fan of photos during the teen years.

Challenge 2. Write a letter to 30 people that have in some way shaped the person I turned out to be.
Difficulty Level: Medium/High. Not sure what thirty people I will include.

Challenge 3. 30 day photo challenge.
Difficulty Level: Easy. I saw this list floating around in the blogging universe and thought it would be fun but I never did it so now is the time.

Challenge 4. Still pondering this one... I'm open to suggestions.

Happy Father's Day

I was blessed with the best Dad. I'm not just saying that. He really is a great human being. I have felt loved and cared for since the day I was born and I know that as long as I can feel I will feel that way. I also know that if I'm craving a cheeseburger at 1am I can probably talk him into going to get one for me. So why is this post one week late? I know Last Sunday was Father's day and we celebrated, it's not like I forgot or anything. It's late because I finally found this photo:

I looked and I looked. But alas I could not find it last week. I knew it was in my room somewhere. The photo I so dearly cherish. It's a photo of my dad holding me while standing in line for a ride at Disneyland. Why this photo? Because it's my favorite of me and him. It was from my first trip to Disneyland. I think we are in line for Star Tours. It's not the best looking photo of us. My dad is making a weird face and I'm sun burned but there is just something about this photo. It's so real to me like a memory come to life. I felt so special that day. Just me and my parents, walking around Disneyland in my six year old glory. It was 1987 and I was basking is the August heat and believing my dreams were coming true. I hadn't seen my Dad for a year prior because he moved here from Guatemala. This Disney trip was a few months after my Mom and I moved here too. My Dad kept doting on me that day (like most days anyway) but there was just something about this trip that made him proud to be there with his family and having a day off from working to just laugh and play with his daughter.

Little did he know that he would be the doting Daddy of two more little girls. So even though this is late, but it doesn't matter anyway because really just about everything on this blog gets posted late and celebrations like these should be had more than once a year, Happy Father's Day Daddy.

Feliz Dia De Las Madres

Today is Mother's Day. Well only to those born of a Mexican, Guatemalan or Salvadorian Mother it is. Being Guatemalan I qualify. Growing up I always thought May 10 was Mother's Day. It wasn't until I was like a teenager that I learned that here, in the US it's the second Sunday in May. So my Mom gets two.

This is my Mom. I know what you are thinking...yes, this is where I get 50% of my good looks. Seriously, look at that shiny brown hair, the creamy complexion. That wrinkle free face (she's going on 51 by the way), the sweet smile and well you get the point. What else did I get from my Mom? An expensive eye. If you give us a list of items we always end up choosing the most expensive thing, it's really weird. We also seem to have a fascination with bread. While my temper, character and personality are a mix of a little bit of her and a lot of  my Dad's, I'm most like her in that we both are super sensitive. Seriously, we can cry over anything and really easily too.  Movies, news, sad stories, happy stories, commercials, other peoples sad stories and happy stories and anything that has to do with our Dad's. She's also a Daddy's girl.

I like looking back at my childhood photos and seeing the cute dresses you hand made for me. I like how I can still ask you to make me a sandwich because I'm too lazy on the couch to make one myself. I love your food, you are the best cook ever! I love how obsessive you get with opening the windows to let the light in, it cracks me up. I love how gullible you can be sometimes, it has provided plenty of laughs for all of us, I think my favorite is still the "magic maxi pads". This is a total inside joke that she would be mortified to know I mentioned on here. I like that my love for shoes was something I probably also inherited from you. I love that you like to dress up and look good, even if you annoy me by asking me to put on some makeup or wear something nicer before I go out the door. I don't love your choice in perfumes, they make me gag, but sometimes when I find a sweater of yours and and the scent has diffused and only a little bit of it lingers that has mixed with your scent, I find it comforting.

Feliz Dia de las Madres, Mami! I love you so much!

The Day After Cinco De Mayo

It's May 6th. Or more appropriately Seis De Mayo. Nothing special is celebrated today - Correction - I Just found out that 6th of May it is actually International No Diet Day!! Now I don't feel bad for having a plateful of burrito/quesadilla/nachos for lunch at work. Plus, how appropriate is it that I woke up craving chilaquiles (a Mexican breakfast dish) on both days? But alas, there was no time for me to make some. Nor do I actually know how to make some. Good thing I have plenty of great friends, three whom so kindly have promised to make me some. The competition is on Karla, Veronica and Doreen!! But I will probably love all 3 anyway.

Speaking of food, Mexico and friends... We had a mini Cinco De Mayo dinner last night. Everyone made/bought food and we sat around listening to Veronica tell her horror travel stories. Listened to some Mariachi and ate a lot of food. Specially, a lot of beans! For some reason, Veronica decided that a giant pot of beans was necessary. And some gooooood flan for dessert.

There was some confusion on what I was supposed to bring. They were all under the impression that I would be "making" ceviche. Well, I made the time to go buy some so it counts.
Doreen, drunk of Horchata!
Dont bother us, we're eating!

Yes It is!

laughing at Veronica s comment...You had to be there!
That may or may not have been my third helping of beans...

Happy Cinco De Mayo!

Lots of fun and great home cooked/store bought/ restaurant ordered food was had by all :)

And please, please tell me that you know what was celebrated yesterday. Please tell me that you know it was not Mexico's Independence Day. That would be September 16. I will let Wikipedia inform you some more. What? Wikipedia is reliable!

I still don't understand why it's such a big deal in the US, there will even be a parade around my neighborhood this weekend. ut whatever, fun is had, food is eaten and plenty of drinks are had. Que viva Mexico! Hope you had a great Cinco De Mayo and Seis De Mayo aka International No Diet Day! And while I'm at it Siete & Ocho De Mayo.

Marisol

Happy Valentine's Day

I was going to post an Over the Weekend post today, but I can do it tomorrow. It's that time of the year again...It's Valentine's Day.

My take on it: We should celebrate LOVE everyday. Today is just the cherry on top.
We should also celebrate all types of love. Parents give your kids extra hugs ans kisses today, pet owners give your animal companions a treat today, give your friends some cookies... so much love all around.

So I leave you with these seriously disturbing but funny as can be vintage Valentine's Day cards:

Dear Previous Generations: What the hell? Seriously.

This one made me laugh the most, PSYCHO!

Family Recipe: Torrejas

After the success of making Chuchitos, my cousin Yuzema and I were on a high. Let's do a recipe every month!! Images of having our own Food Network show began to dance around my head. Yeah, I know, the chuchitos were that amazing.

So for the month of December my cousin suggested we do a traditional holiday dessert. Torrejas. I had to think about this one for a second as it had been a few years since I even had one. They are basically this sweet bread with a custard type filling inside, fried and then drenched in a sweet liquid. So New Year's Eve we set out to make torrejas.of course we waited until like 6 pm to actually go and buy everything.

First stop, the bakery, fail (Mexican sweet bread wont work). Second stop, the Bakery (The Guatemalan Bakery we should have gone to first in the first place). They were out of the bread you actually use but we found something close enough. Third stop the grocery store. Made a few calls to Mom, and found everything we needed. Jazmin, Yuzema's daughter,  was eager to get started.

Such a cutie pie!

Not yet, Jaz!!

We got home only to find that Mom had left. And there was no recipe in sight. No answer to her cell. OK, plan B, call our Tia. Plan B would have worked had Plan B answered her cell. Plan C, call another Tia in Virginia... 1 out of the 3 would answer, right, right, right??? YES! Thank you Tia Glendy (shout out to you from Cali, hope you are enjoying the snow) for giving us somewhat directions on how to make manjar. Apparently everyone in this family uses measurements such as: to your taste, a handful, about a cup (not a measured cup mind you just any old cup), a packet maybe two, a spoonful (not an actual measured spoon full but one you may find in your silverware), when it "looks" done, before it "looks" done. Yup That's how the Campos ladies roll.

So we got started... a whole of "looks good to me" also started.

all of our ingredients

That's me adding a friggin gigantic spoonful of cinnamon. We were told to use cinnamon sticks but we figured this would be "neater" as in we wouldn't have to go in later and pick out the stick from the manjar. Sound logic if you ask me.

Yes, I'm posing with cinnamon, cause that's how cool I am.

Fact: Yuzema has mad bread cutting skills...

Lesson learned: Staring at milk wont make it boil any faster!

Fact: Knowing how to crack and egg and separate the yolk truly is a gift... one that I was born with.

Fianlly like an hour later -- oh yeah we got some MANJAR in the house. It should be white but that's what happens when you put too much cinnamon. It was still really, really yummy.

Time to get our frying skills on... Paula Dean eat your heart out!

I got a little tired and wanted to stretch my hip muscles...

About THREE hours later, VICTORY WAS OURS!! Yes, I'm yelling here. Aren't they beautiful? We made two dozen but these were the better looking dozen. We also forgot to add the little raisin on the center top but whateves... Here they are in all their fried glory, time to drench them in some sweet stuff!

In other words, time to make the Juice! It's like melted syrup, that's the best way I can explain its' taste. I have no idea what the actual thing we melted to make it is called but Jazmin was eager to eat it if you scroll up a few pictures, you'll see what I'm talking about.

Ain't she pretty? Or he? Or it actually. (pretend we put a raisin on it)

They were soooo gooooooood. Food Network here we come.

While doing some online research, we learned that there are like different versions of this thing, some call them Molletes, but in this family... It's a Torreja!

Oh Christmas Spirit

Hello everyone, I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas. We love, LOVE Christmas at my house. A few days after thanksgiving we go decoration shopping. Every year the tree gets a theme. Or a color scheme actually. Last year it was silver and blue, one year it was purple and gold, we call that tree out Laker tree. This year we wanted a candy colored tree. So we looked through our inventory and bought what was missing.

I hate Wal-Mart. I don't like shopping there. Except for Christmas stuff. It's cheap but nice enough. Big Lots is also a great location. If we are gonna be decorating a tree differently every year, we cant afford to pay $2 or $3 for every single ornament. That's just some crazy stuff right there! Because at my house it does not end with the tree. Nope we got the lights, the Holly plants, the Christmas pillows on the couch, the Feliz Navidad signs, and a bunch of other stuff. Even the bathroom gets a makeover, thanks Mom!

But back to the tree for a moment.. it's an art form really. We take our time and really try to figure out how to best make it look great. Karen and I are in charge of said decorating, as we will never, ever allow Mom to decorate the tree after the disaster of 2001. This year it took about 4 hours including a quick trip to CVS because we forgot to buy ornament hangers. We though we had plenty but every year we always end up buying some. Where the heck do those buggers go?

Usually our Christmas is the 24th. We stay up till Midnight, Dad says a few word we say a little prayer of thanks and then... It's present time!!! The following day we all sleep in and later go to the movies. This year unfortunately 4 out of 5 member of the clan were viciously attacked by an intestinal virus. I am the sole survivor. So I made this little 3 min video condensing the 4 hours of tree decorating. Enjoy everybody.

I really do hope you all had a wonderful Holiday!!!!!! What are some of your family traditions?

Dear Santa

Most people are shocked when I tell them I never believed in Santa Claus. Yeah, take a moment to breath into a paper bag... since I'm 29 you can get over it quickly. Get ready for another bag though... I don't plan on letting my kids believe in it either. You OK out there?

Hear me out. Growing up I still did have that giddy, goofy look when I saw Santa at the mall but it's like when you spot a celebrity. They are just people but you cant help and get a little excited. I was brought up focusing on the "Christ" part of  Christmas. It was about the gift of Jesus. With that said my house still transformed and there were lights, holly plants and a Christmas tree, the decorating was in full bloom. But at the core in my house, it was never about that stuff. Now, not everyone may agree with that but I was happy with that. It made all the extra stuff like presents and decorations even more special because I realized what I was celebrating. It wasn't about the gifts I was going to get, it was really just a happy time. Besides when you are a kid you always get presents around this time. From relatives, neighbors, friends, church... People can't help but gift kids. Who needs Santa!

Then there was the day I ruined Santa for my whole second grade class. I guess my parents should of told me not to tell other kids there is no real Santa. There was crying and there was some angry parents but all in all they got over it. I hope. Note to self: Make sure to tell future children to not spoil Santa for other children. That's the other thing. Some kids really take it hard when they find out the truth. Now that is just mean in my opinion.

I'm sure many of you will disagree with me. Go ahead. It's OK. I'm not trying to change your mind or run some campaign against Santa. I'm just sharing. I hope to instill in my kids a love for the holiday and to teach them about giving and not receiving so much, although that's always a toughie since, well, they are kids. That it's OK to have fun with the notion of Santa Claus but to understand that he's not real just a character and he's definitely not getting the children all over the world presents for being good and coal to those that are bad. That I will be getting the presents that I can give them. I also hope to pass on the crazy decorating gene that turns me into a Christmas Nazi. Hmm Christmas and Nazi, not two word I thought of ever putting together, but there they are. I'm serious about the decorating. So much so that I am dedicating a second Christmas post on it.

Nowadays, my sisters (they also did not believe in Santa) and I post our Christmas list up so we (our immediate family) can see what we all want. We even force one out of Mom and Dad. They usually give us the "You don't have to get me anything" line but we just roll our eyes and ask anyway. Well, we get that line from Dad, Mom usually has no problem letting us know. It all started as a joke when my sister, Karen, put a car as her number one gift for Christmas one year. She wasn't getting it but the other smaller items on her list rolled in. Genius! She no longer places a car on her list. Only because she gave up not because she actually got one. Hahaha hehehe... Sometimes we'll put something that we know for sure we are not getting but it's more of a joke than anything else. Even though down deep inside we really want it. I know Karen still wants that car! Bottom line we don't stress about gifts, if we can, we give. If we can't, we don't. The lists are just for us 5. We don't pass them out or anything.

When people come over they always say "Hey that's a great idea" so I thought it would be a fun post to share my x-mas list and maybe you will share yours. Or start your own list with your family or completely hate the idea and that's OK. (Can you guess what my joke item is this year even though I really want it!?!?!)

So in the spirit of children that do believe in Santa... Here is my first ever letter to Santa:

Dear Santa,

I hope you are doing well and that your elves are working hard but not too hard. Hopefully you have upgraded to some sort of assembly line and they can mass produce all the toys needed for all the kids around the world. We have an overpopulated planet so I can only imagine how stressing it is to see the list grow every year.

I've been a really good girl this year. I swear ask my Mom and Dad. There were a few moments here and there but nothing too bad. Here is what I would like for Christmas presents:
And last but definitely not least:

So that's it. Oh and if it wouldn't be too much trouble could you also please, if your not too busy, feed all the hungry children in the world and make sure they have some shoes too. That would be great, even if it means not getting me anything on my list.

    Merry Christmas,
    Marisol

So how did I do? What's on your list for "Santa"?
